Recovering a Corrupt SD Card (or Making a New One)

Postby TheArtificer » Sun Oct 02, 2011 6:43 pm

This short post will help those of you unlucky enough to have received a corrupt or DOA SD card.

What you need:

-USB Image Tool (Here http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/)
-A XK SD card image file - http://xkeydownloads.com/MicroSdImages/XK3y-111mb.img

Getting ready:

-Unzip USB Image Tool to a directory on your Hard Disk.
-Unzip the XK SD card image file into the same directory.
-A micro SD card, preferably the 128MB card that came with XK but if this is not working you can use any micro SD card you have available

Writing the image:

-Plug your SD card into a USB card reader, plug the card reader into your PC. Note the drive letter Windows assigns to it
-Run the USB Image Tool (on Vista & 7 be sure to run it as Administrator)
-Make sure the USB Image Tool is in "Device Mode"
-Select the SD card from the list in USB Image Tool
-Click the "Restore" button in USB Image Tool
-A FileOpen Dialog will appear, select the XK SD card image file you unzipped previously
-Wait a few seconds for USB Image Tool to do its thing
-Eject/Safely Remove the SD card in explorer

You now have a factory fresh micro SD card with XK FW version 01.02 ready to use, add your firmware/dummy.bin file and test in your XK.

Here is an image - 111mb, tiny...they started shipping these smaller ones in March 2013 - http://xkeydownloads.com/MicroSdImages/XK3y-111mb.img

The image you flash on your micro sd card needs to be smaller or the same size as the micro sd card. This means you can use 128mb, 256mb, 2gb, 4gb etc etc. Every single batch from the xk3y team is a different size, the above image is 111mb and the smallest its even been so its best to just use this one.

But here are some older images that have been uploaded:

Edit: Updated to 01.06 - http://xkeydownloads.com/MicroSdImages/XK3y-type_C.img

**Please note, if you make a new card please use a Micro Sd card reader, not a microSD to SDcard adapter that is plugged into a reader as it usually doesn't work**

ADMIN edit: Firmware 1.23 image WITH iso menu enabled already. Just added your firmware.bin or dummy.bin and thats it! -> http://xkeydownloads.com/MicroSdImages/ ... eIMAGE.img

I have the E64 error, and I follow the step to recover the SD Card, however when I try to restore the SD card with the image downloaded from here, the USB show the image file is too big for the SD Card, So I choose Trunate oversize image, but it doesn't work. The SD card is default come from the package. So... How to fix it?

Mine is the one that comes with the package and works perfect.
The only problem i had was with the sd card adapter that comes with.
I had to use another one i have here.
So try to use another sd card adapter it might solve your problem.
Also format it 1st in windows fat formatation.
Good luck!

What if i have a built in slot to read cards? can i just format the memory stick regularly? or do i have to get a usb reader to do this?

I was able to use the software and recover my memory card with a built in reader in a laptop. first I had to format to FAT32, then it saw it and let me.

i did run into the 'card too small for image' issue, then remembered i didn't run the image software as administrator, after i did that, the 'card to small' error went away and worked fine. just in case that happens to someone else.

I tried running the program that restores the SD card as administrator.. I still did not get it to work.. It keeps telling me that there's not enough space on it :(.. Any suggestions ?

format first in windows

then use the recovery software

after this is done , put your firmware and xkey.cfg file on sd card
